TANNIN WARNING: Merbau’s superior strength and stability are attributable to its tannin-rich properties, resulting in low shrinkage and minimal surface and end splitting. Tannin is a naturally occurring substance in timber that will leach the first few times it is exposed to moisture. If left unsealed tannin will leach from the product staining timber, tiled area and other nearby surfaces. Objects left on the timber surface can also draw tannin out, creating surface marks. We strongly recommend sealing all sides of the board with 2-3 coats of an appropriate treatment of oil, wax or lacquer before use. We also recommend regular re-coating of the surface throughout the life of the product to protect it from moisture penetration and to maintain its premium appearance.
